The one thing most of us could use more of is energy. If you think about it, in our society today, we just don’t slow down. We are always going, and even when we try to slow down, we are still connected to technology, which can be equally exhausting.

But what if you’re getting enough sleep and don’t have a hectic lifestyle but are still exhausted? Could there be something you are overlooking?

According to Dr. Anthony Komaroff, Harvard Medical School professor and senior physician at Boston’s Brigham and Woman’s Hospital, “fatigue can be like an early warning sign of potentially more severe problems down the road if you don’t recognize and treat the problems causing the fatigue. You need to explore all possible explanations.”

One easy thing to test for is vitamin and mineral deficiency, and as Dr. Komaroff says, these are some of the most common reasons we feel so tired. Iron deficiency is the most familiar to most of us but not the only one. Other common deficiencies include B12, magnesium, folic acid, and potassium.

If you eat a well-balanced diet, you shouldn’t have these deficiencies, but so many of us are limiting or eliminating whole food groups. According to Jessica Crandall, a registered dietitian and spokeswomen for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “most Americans are engaged in some kind of fad diet throughout their life, which can cause repercussions such as nutrient deficiencies.”

What most of us don’t realize is that a deficiency in one or more vitamins can have additional symptoms so it can be difficult to pinpoint the cause. Things like headaches, muscle aches, and weakness can all be signs you’re not getting the nutrients you need.

Once you understand your symptoms are due to inadequate vitamin intake, it’s a fairly easy fix. Changing your diet to include those nutrients is essential, but it can still be difficult to ensure you are getting what you need. That’s why many health professionals recommend taking supplements as well. In order to alleviate symptoms and further issues down the road, it’s vital to get the proper amounts and supplements can help you to do that.

Most of us don’t think about the importance of vitamins and minerals in our overall health, but when we don’t get the required amounts, it can lead to a variety of more serious health concerns.

We all have times when we feel tired and run down, but if the condition becomes chronic, it’s time to make an appointment with your medical professional and find the root of the problem. When you begin to feel more energized, you’ll be glad you did.
