When you think of cinnamon, you may have fond memories of warm cinnamon toast on a cold morning or walking through the mall taking in the aroma of cinnamon buns. But what if cinnamon was more than a spice that made foods taste delicious?

Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees and has been considered a medicinal plant for some time. Most of us enjoy it for the taste, but what if it could help to keep us healthy as well?

Although researchers have found a variety of health benefits associated with cinnamon, the one that is getting the most attention relates to the studies concerning cinnamon and blood sugar.

According to Paul Davis, a research nutritionist at the University of California Davis, and author of an article on the subject of Cinnamon and glucose published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, “Yes, it does work.” He said, adding, “according to our results, it’s a modest effect of about 3 to 5 percent.”

If lowering blood sugar is as easy as adding cinnamon to your diet, there are plenty of delicious ways to do it. Adding it to your oatmeal, sprinkling it on fresh fruit or including it into a rub are just a few ways, but if you don’t consider yourself a chef, taking a cinnamon supplement is another way, which will allow you to monitor just how much you’re getting.

As researchers continue to study the effects of cinnamon on blood glucose, studies have shown varied results, indicating that the use of cinnamon can be helpful in controlling glucose levels, but it shouldn’t replace medications and treatments from your doctor.

The good news is that none of the studies have shown cinnamon to produce a negative effect, which means that you can still enjoy the delicious taste of cinnamon, just don’t overdo it, a little bit is all you need.
