This time of year, many of us find there are two words that cause us to shiver with fear. Those words are flu season. If you’ve ever experienced the flu, you know just how miserable it can be.

The flu, also known as the influenza virus, is an extremely contagious virus that affects the upper and lower respiratory system. Between the fatigue, body aches, fever, and sore throat, it comes with a variety of additional symptoms that make us feel absolutely horrible.

Of course, no one wants to get the flu, and many of us start protecting ourselves well in advance, hoping it will pass us by. But not everyone gets lucky. If you want to give yourself a chance to escape the flu, here are some recommendations that can help.

Get a flu shot – doctors recommend that everyone get a flu shot, as it’s our best protection against the flu. As you know, the flu is a virus and there is no type of medication that can get rid of a virus, so prevention is our best defense.

Strengthen the immune system – staying healthy comes down to how well we fight germs, so making sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals you need is vital. Supplements that can help include Vitamins A, B6, C, and E, as well as selenium, iron, folic acid, and zinc.

Get enough sleep – this is the one area where most of us are severely lacking. We put off sleep to do a lot of things, but without the proper amount of rest, our bodies can’t recover and get run down, making us susceptible to illness, especially during cold and flu season.
