Is MSM a Miracle Supplement?

Is MSM a Miracle Supplement? It May Be If You’re Not Getting Enough

MSM, known in medical circles as methylsulfonylmethane, has gotten a lot of attention regarding the many health benefits it provides. A few of them include helping to reducing discomfort in the joints, and supporting a healthy immune response, but there are also a variety of additional benefits being studied.

The popularity of MSM may stem from the fact that it provides us with the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, an organic sulfur-containing compound, which is used for a number of vital bodily functions.

Also called DMSO2, scientifically known as dimethyl sulfone, MSM is important because it supports our bodies connective tissues such as our ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Getting the Sulfur We Need

This essential mineral can be found in foods such as dairy products, fish, poultry, meat, and eggs, and as long as you eat a well-balanced diet that includes these foods, you probably are getting what you need. But the fact is that many of us have excluded these foods from our diets. In that case, a supplement may be needed.

How Does MSM Benefit the Body?

Researchers have found that MSM decreases the pressure in the cells which allows for the removal of toxins and fluids. Because of this, MSM has shown promise in treating several common health issues including:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Muscle cramps
  • Joint discomfort
  • Knee discomfort
  • Muscle discomfort

Since our cells are always regenerating, it’s important to provide our bodies with enough sulfur to make it efficient, which is why so many of us rely on taking an MSM supplement. If you are deficient, it can make cell regeneration a more difficult process.

Do You Need to Take an MSM Supplement?

Since we rely on sulfur to provide us with healthy cells, you would think that the body would provide enough, yet so many of us are still deficient. That is most likely true of those of us who have decided to focus on eating a plant-based diet. No matter what your reasons for excluding meats, dairy and eggs, plant foods don’t contain the amounts of sulfur we need, especially as we age and unfortunately, those plant foods are even less adequate after washing and cooking.

We need this essential mineral for our bodies to do all the difficult jobs it does to keep us healthy, so the question is, why wouldn’t we want to take an MSM supplement if we could benefit from it? That’s an easy question to answer when your goal is optimal health, don’t you agree?
